Poland is ready to discuss with Russia and the United States different forms of accessibility to elements of U.S. missile defense system if it is built in Poland, Deputy Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said here on Sunday.
A declaration adopted by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush in Sochi of Russia on Sunday said the United States and Russia are interested in creating a system against potential missile threats.
Russia said in the declaration that it maintained its opposition to U.S. plans to deploy elements of a missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.
"Russian presence in Poland is out of the question. Such solution had been resorted to in the past and will not be repeated," Waszczkowski told Polish news agency PAP.
"We appreciate that Russia wants to talk on shield elements deployment in Poland," he added.
"We did not expected Russia to suddenly resign from the opposition and enthuse over the plan so we predicted it would retain its position," Waszczykowski said.
The United States is planning to deploy 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic as part of its European missile shield.
Russia has objected the plan, saying it will threat Russian national security, and has warned that Moscow will target its missiles at the system if it is deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic.
