Portugal Tuesday called for closer international cooperation to effectively fight global crime such as the trafficking of weapons, illicit drugs and people, and money laundering.
Portuguese Minister of Internal Administration Rui Pereira made the plea during the first Interior Ministers' Forum of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) held here.
"New challenges and threats to internal security are placed in the international sphere and demand a joint answer from our states," Pereira said.
At the end of the forum Wednesday, the ministers will issue the Lisbon Declaration, in which they will express their determination to fight global crime, Pereira said.
The declaration will also establish the mechanism of holding CPLP interior ministers' meetings annually.
Moreover, the CPLP members will create a police chief board to exchange experience as well as to prevent and fight international crime, said Pereira.
The CPLP, formed in July 1996, comprises Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, and East Timor.
