The city-state of Bremen became on Wednesday the first German state to introduce a state-wide speed limit on autobahns.
The smallest state in northern Germany hopes that the 120 kph general speed limit in its 60 kilometers of autobahn will inspire other 15 German states to follow suit.
"Our goal is to introduce a general speed limit on autobahns in the whole country together with other states," said Reinhard Loske, Bremen's top environment official, adding that the initiative was aimed at traffic safety as well as environment protection.
About half of Germany's 12,000 kilometers of autobahns have no speed limit.
The issue of a national speed limit has become a battle with environmentalists and traffic safety activists on the one side, car-makers and pro-business politicians on the other side.
