UN mediator Matthew Nimetz said on Thursday Macedonian leaders have promised to resume talks with Greece over a name dispute between the two neighbors.
Macedonia's NATO membership was blocked by Greece over a 17-year-long name dispute between the two countries early this month at a NATO summit in Romanian capital of Bucharest.
Athens opposes its neighbor's constitutional name of "The Republic of Macedonia", arguing it implies a territorial claim over a Greek northern province also called Macedonia.
"I have been assured by Macedonian leadership that the country is committed to resuming the negotiations on settling the name issue," Nimetz said, believing that the name issue may be resolved by July 1.
Nimetz made the announcement after he held separate talks with Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. He will travel to Athens to meet Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis on Friday.
