The Portuguese government Thursday approved the Extradition Convention among the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) member states.
The accord obliges the CPLP countries to hand over people in their territories being sought by other countries' authorities.
The accord, along with the Judicial Aid Convention in Penal Matters and the Transference of People Convention between CPLP member states, were approved at a weekly meeting of the Ministers' Council.
The conventions, signed in Praia City, Cape Verde Islands (country in northwest Africa) on Nov. 23, 2005, represent "the first multilateral level initiative" that includes all the CPLP state members, said a statement released by the Ministers' Council.
They aim to "establish a greater cooperation level between the respective judicial systems to more efficiently fight crime," stated the statement.
According to the Judicial Aid Convention in Penal Matters, CPLP members will provide aid for each other in information exchange, processing actions and other necessary public actions to carry out a penal process.
The CPLP groups Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor.
