The Bulgarian government confirmed its cabinet reshuffle, approved at a session of the ruling coalition's political council on Tuesday.

The Political Council of the ruling coalition unanimously approved at the meeting the structural and personnel cabinet changes proposed by Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, the Government Information Service said Tuesday.

The ruling coalition nominated Bulgaria's Ambassador to Germany Meglena Plougchieva as deputy prime minister without portfolio in charge of the coordination between the various operational programs' Managing Authorities and Implementing Agencies and the dialogue with the European Commission and the Directorates General concerned with the EU funds.

The current Chairman of the Socialist parliamentary group Mihail Mikov was appointed as interior minister after Rumen Petkov handed in his resignation after recent scandals that have shaken the institution.

Senior Research Associate Valeri Tsvetanov, Director of the Nikola Poushkarov Institute for Soil Science and Agroecology, will be the new minister of agriculture and food supply in the place of Nihat Kabil.

The post of the Defense Minister Vesselin Bliznakov is to be taken by Nikolay Tsonev, the executive director of executive agency "Social Activities" with the ministry.

Evgeniy Zhelev, former mayor of Stara Zagora and incumbent chairman of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, is to replace the current Bulgaria Health Minister Radoslav Gaydarski.

The rest of the Cabinet members will keep their portfolios.

These changes are intended to ensure a successful implementation of the governance program until the end of the term. Full parliamentary support was also pledged at the meeting. The changes will be put to the vote at the National Assembly on Thursday.

The replacements of deputy ministers and regional vice governors, as well as the restructuring of agencies and executive bodies under the government will be announced next week after additional consultations.
