Turkey expects to join the European Union in seven or eight years despite German and French opposition, Chairman of Turkey's Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs Yasar Yakis said here on Tuesday, Hungarian News Agency MTI reported.
Yakis said Turkey was not concerned with trying to convince Germany and France to accept this idea, because by the time Turkeywill be ready for the EU, the political and diplomatic environment will be completely different.
Turkey has resolved to improve democracy and reduce corruption, Yakis said, once we manage that, it will not matter whether we join the EU or not.
Yakis said Turkey does not view the EU as a Christian club but as a community of united values, which Turkey too can espouse.
Chairman of Hungary's European Affairs Committee Matyas Eorsi said Hungary fully supported Turkey's EU accession.
A delegation from Turkey's national assembly is in Hungary to attend the first event of a Hungarian-Turkish twinning program to promote Turkey's European Union accession.
