German Chancellor Angela Merkel and visiting Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak Wednesday called for an early presidential election in Lebanon.

"A solution must urgently be found to elect a president so that the political process can move forward," Mubarak told a press briefing after talks with Merkel in Berlin.

Mubarak said Egypt has met with all sides in the Lebanese conflict to explore a way out.

The Egyptian president said he recently met with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri in efforts to promote the political process.

Berri Tuesday postponed a parliamentary session to elect a president, without setting the exact date of the next session. It is the 18th postponement since Sept. 25, 2007.

Lebanon is facing the most complicated political crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war. The majority and opposition in parliament have been unable to achieve a breakthrough to elect a new president since Nov. 24, 2007.

Under the U.N. mandate, Germany has deployed naval units to patrol the Lebanese coast to halt the smuggling of arms.
