Ukraine's government decided to cancel grain export quotas, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko announced Wednesday.
"We have lifted the restrictions and traders can freely export grain," Tymoshenko told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Tymoshenko pointed out that the introduction of quotas on grain exports was a temporary measure, which is not necessary any longer in light of an expected increase of grain harvest this year, adding the government's decision would not push up domestic grain prices.
Ukraine's agricultural enterprises and organizations recently called on the government to cancel grain export limits due to over plus in the domestic market. According to official data, Ukraine's grain reserves reached more than ten million tons by April 1, up 30 percent compared with the same period of last year.
Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko predicted the country's grain yield will reach 40 million tons in 2008. Last year, Ukraine produced 29.3 million tons of grain (including corn).
