Austria will become a member state of the European Organization for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO), Austrian Science Minister Johannes Hahn said Thursday.
Hahn hailed Austria's entry as the most relevant political decision for research in the past 20 years, benefiting astrophysicists, particle physicists, mathematicians, software specialists and Austrian High-tech companies.
ESO General Director Tim de Zeeuw said the ESO Council would examine the entry of Austria for about six weeks and that he was quite sure that the result would be positive.
ESO, headquartered in Germany, was created in 1962. It is the biggest international organization for astronomical research, grouping 13 members operating a suite of the world's most advanced ground-based astronomical telescopes in Chile.
Austria has cooperated with ESO and pursued membership since the 1970s. Source:Xinhua
