The parliament speakers of Croatia and Canada pledged on Thursday to develop all-round good and fruitful cooperation between the two countries.

Croatian Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic said that Canada had huge economic and other resources and there were many possibilities of cooperation between the countries, the Croatian news agency HINA reported from the capital Zagreb.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Peter Milliken, speaker of the Canadian House of Commons, said that his visit would help increase cooperation and contacts between the two countries that would increase trade, tourism, and cooperation on the international scene.

Milliken said Canada supports Croatia on its road to European Union and NATO membership.

He said there would be no problems regarding the ratification of Croatia's agreement on NATO accession in the Canadian parliament next year.

On April 15, Croatia said it has formally accepted the NATO's invitation to launch negotiations on the alliance's membership for the Western Balkan country.

Croatia, which received an invitation to join the NATO at the alliance's Bucharest summit in early April, has said it hoped to become a NATO member by mid next year and that membership of the alliance will boost the country's chances of joining the European Union soon.

During his meeting with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, Milliken congratulated him on Croatia's recent invitation to join NATO and conveyed Canada's support for Croatia's Euro-Atlantic integration, Mesic's office said in a statement.

Mesic and Milliken said they were happy with the development of bilateral relations, and that economic cooperation should be intensified.
