Representatives of left-wing organized a May Day parade in downtown Warsaw on Thursday, and May Day parades were also organized all over Poland, local media reported.

The parade held under the slogan "man before profit" attracted members of the All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions OPZZ, Democratic Left Alliance, the Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland SDPL, the Union of Labor UP and the Polish Socialist Party PPS.

According to organizers more then 2,000 people took part in the parade. Police securing the parade gave no data.

OPZZ head Jan Guz said Poland boasts high economic growth but at the same time it has a huge group of marginalized citizens.

SLD leader Wojciech Olejniczak promised that the left would never repeat past mistakes and would not flippantly treat people.

Head of the Polish Teachers' Union Slawomir Broniarz stated that despite the change in power teachers and budget sector employees continue to live on pittance.

Member of the PPS demanded equal job opportunities.

New Left organized its own parade urging the authorities to improve labor conditions and the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

The observance of workers' rights was demanded by an alternative parade organized by Greens 2004, Left-wing Alternative, the Union of Polish unionists and Worker Initiative trade union.

Some 100 homeless and jobless marched in Katowice in a parade organized by the Upper Silesian Charity Society supporting the worst-off residents.

"We believe that this is a day against discrimination of people wronged by governments, the system, the society," said Society head Dietmar Brehmer of German majority in Poland.
