Serbian President Boris Tadic has received death threats because of his alleged "betrayal" of the Serbs in supporting the signing of a pre-membership pact with the European Union, officials said Monday.
Tadic attended the signing of the Stability and Association Agreement (SAA) in Luxembourg last week despite major EU powers' recognition of Kosovo, whose ethnic Albanian majority unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in February.
"We are aware of the death threats President Tadic received," the state prosecutor's office said in a statement.
"Relevant state institutions are taking all measures necessary to protect the president and identify the perpetrators," it said.
Tadic's coalition, "For a European Serbia", is fighting an uphill battle to win the general elections on May 11.
Early elections were called after the coalition government of Tadic's Democrats with nationalist Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica collapsed in March over differences between hardliners opposed to any ties with the EU, and pro-western liberals who want to move toward membership without relinquishing Kosovo.
Serbian nationalists regard the signing of the SAA as a recognition of independence for the breakaway province.
Tadic's cabinet declined to comment on the death threat, while the Belgrade daily Blic reported Monday that the threatening letter warned Tadic that "scores will be settled with him for betraying the country, and that as a proven traitor of the Serbian people, he will receive what he deserves -- a bullet to the head."
