Russia's outgoing President Vladimir Putin has pledged to offer aid to Myanmar, where a cyclone has killed thousands of people, the Itar-Tass new agency reported Tuesday.
"On behalf of all Russians, I express sincere condolences to relatives of the casualties. I also ask you to convey our words of support and wishes of speedy recovery to the injured people," Putin said in a condolence message to top Myanmarese leader Senior General Than Shwe, chairman of the State Peace and Development Council.
"Russia will be ready to provide necessary assistance to Myanmar to deal with the aftermath of this natural disaster," the president added.
Over 22,000 people were killed in two divisions of Yangon and Ayeyawaddy as Cyclone Nargis tore through Myanmar's five divisions and states at the weekend, while another 41,054 are still missing, according to state radio. Source: Xinhua
