The inauguration ceremony of Russia's new president Dmitry Medvedev started on Wednesday at which he would succeed President Vladimir Putin.

The grand ceremony, held at the Kremlin Wednesday noon, was attended by senior officials as well as foreign guests.

Medvedev, the third and youngest Russian head of state since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, swept the March 2 elections thanks to Putin's endorsement.

The former law professor and first deputy prime minister has pledged to continue Putin's policies and Putin is expected to take the position of prime minister on Thursday.
