Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik said Wednesday that the federal government of Austria promised to provide the UN World Food Program (WFP) 2.79 million euros (one euro=1.54 U.S. dollars)
"We should understand the dimension of the crisis. Hundreds millions of people will face the threat of death, which was caused by the famine crisis due to the rising food prices," she said, while pointing out that the Austrian Foreign Ministry had offered 1 million euros to the four worst involved countries: Namibia, Haiti, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.
"The protective umbrella of the UN must be supplemented by the rapid action of every individual States," she added, announcing that Austria would more efficiently help the United Nations on this issue.
She also underlined the three measures: food aiding, financing agricultural production facilities and financing the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) development projects.
The WFP has launched an assistance of about 500 million U.S. dollars which was also supported by FAO.
