The Russian government will cut Russia's growing inflation rate to single digit in the years to come, Vladimir Putin, the candidate for prime minister, said on Thursday.

"Our goal in the next few years is to achieve single-digit inflation," Putin, whose nomination for prime minister is to be approved by the lower house of the parliament, or the State Duma, said in a speech to the parliament.

Putin also called for lowering taxes to stimulate oil production and processing. "To stimulate growth in the production and processing of oil, the time has come to lower the tax burden on this economic sector," he said.
