Austrian Federal Minister for Women Doris Bures said here Thursday that the situation of family violence in Austria is quite serious.

Two out of 10 women suffer male violence at least one time during their lifetime, Bures said on the opening ceremony of a 700square meters intervention station against family violence in Vienna.

"From 2001 to 2006, family violence has increased 172 percent," she said, adding that 12,691 women helped by intervention stations last year, which increased 1,543 year on year.

But women are not the only victims of family violence, the director of the newly founded station said, adding that around 7 percent of the victims registered in intervention stations are male.
