German Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated on Thursday former Russian President Vladimir Putin on his new role as Russian Prime Minister, saying that she expected to continue to work together with him.

"I'm looking forward to continuing intensive cooperation with you in your new capacity," said Merkel in a message of congratulation published on Thursday in Berlin.

Merkel also said in the message sent to Putin that Germany would remain a reliable partner for him and his government.

In an interview with German regional newspaper Passauer Neue Presse, Merkel also said that she expected a cooperative relationship with newly inaugurated Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
