Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip said Thursday he hoped Estonian-Russian relations would be improved now that Dmitry Medvedev has assumed the Russian presidency, press reports reaching here from the Estonian capital Tallin said.
Speaking at a press conference, Ansip said he hoped there would be improvement in bilateral relations after Medvedev became Russia's new president.
The replacement of leaders can often bring new foreign policies for a country, he said.
Russia's relations with the West and the Baltic countries should be better than at present and the economic ties between Estonia and Russia should not be influenced by political relations, the prime minister also said.
In April 2007, the Estonian government removed from the capital's center a memorial commemorating Red Army soldiers who died in fighting of the Nazis, as it was seen by many as a symbol of Soviet oppression. The move angered the Russian side and chilled the bilateral relations.
