The Norwegian government on Monday decided to increase its emergency aid to cyclone-ravished Myanmar to 50 million krone (9.8 million U.S. dollars).

Norway had granted 10 million krone (2.0 million dollars) right after the first reports of the catastrophe and now added 40 million krone (7.9 million dollars), the Norwegian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The donations will be distributed through the United Nations, Norwegian and Myanmarian organizations and other international groups, Norway's public broadcaster NRK quoted the ministry as saying.

"We fear that the catastrophe is increasing due to sickness and lack of food," Minister of International Development Erik Solheim said in the statement.

The death toll from Cyclone Nargis has risen to 28,458 and more than 33,000 people remain missing in Myanmar, the country's state media said.
