Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen began a two-day visit to Surinam to strengthen ties with the former colony in South America, the Dutch Foreign Ministry said on its website Tuesday.
The ministers will meet President Ronald Venetiaan and Foreign Minister Lygia Kraag-Keteldijk to discuss cooperation on civil rights, security and combating drug trafficking.
Verhagen will visit a center for juvenile delinquents in the Surinamese capital of Paramaribo, and meet Surinam's Justice Minister Chandrikapersad Santokhi.
"I see it as our task to nourish and expand the links between our countries," Verhagen said on the foreign ministry's website.
He said that there was insufficient communication in the past between the two countries, but there has been increasing mutual interest recently.
