During negotiations on the installation of elements of the U.S. anti-missile shield, Poland is not forwarding demands but only presents is expectations which are "not excessive," Polish Defense Minister Bogdan Klich said on Friday.
Poland expects that the U.S. levels the balance of Poland's security in connection with new challenges "which we would face if we were to accept the American installation in Poland," Polish news agency PAP quoted Klich as saying.
Asked whether Poland is not having excessive "expectations," Klich said that some claim that "our demands are too small, others claim that they are too big."
"We want the Americans to seriously involve themselves in the modernization of our armed forces and that's all," said the minister.
Talks on the shield between the U.S., Poland and the Czech Republic opened at the start of last year. The U.S. plans to install in Poland a base of 10 interceptor rockets and a tracking radar in the Czech Republic, to shield the United States and its allies from attack by what it calls "rogue" states, particularly Iran.
In return for its agreement to install the shield, Poland wants the U.S. to participate in the modernization of the Polish army, mainly of its air defense.
Russia has objected the anti-missile shield plan, saying it will threaten Russian national security, and has warned that Moscow will target its missiles at the system if it is deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic.
