A Russian cargo plane with nine people on board has crashed near an airport in Chelyabinsk, a city in the Urals region, killing all on board, local media reported on Monday.
The AN-12 plane belonged to carrier Moskovia, Interfax and RIA cited a spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Transportation.
All the nine people have been killed in the accident, officials with the Emergency Ministry said.
The turboprop was en route from Chelyabinsk to Perm when it crashed 10 km north of Chelyabinsk, nearly 2,000 km from Moscow, at 6:30 p.m. Moscow time (1430 GMT), RIA said.
The crew reported that smoke was entering the pilot's cabin shortly after takeoff from Chelyabinsk airport and they had decided to return to the airport for an emergency landing.
The plane then disappeared from the radar screens, an air controller was quoted as saying.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has expressed condolence to the families of the victims, and ordered the transportation minister to set up a commission to probe into the tragedy, the Kremlin press office said.
