The Russian Communist Party filed a lawsuit with the country's Supreme Court on Tuesday, calling for the cancellation of the results of last December's elections for the State Duma, or lower house of parliament, news agencies reported.
The petition was presented at court by Communist Party Central Committee Secretaries Vadim Solovyev and Vladimir Ulas. Party leader Gennady Zyuganov and his deputies Ivan Melnikov and Vladimir Kashin were signatories to the petition.
The Communist Party accuses the United Russia Party of violating election publicity rules and "misleading voters by offering deliberately distorted information on candidates," as well as exploiting the administrative resource and "forging votes."
They appealed to the court after the Russian Central Election Commission found their complaints groundless.
The Supreme Court is to decide within a month on whether to initiate proceedings and, in case of a positive decision, to fix a date for hearings.
If the petition is turned down, the Communist Party will not rule out the possibility of appealing to the European Human Rights Court, Solovyev told reporters.
In Russia's fifth elections for the State Duma, held on Dec. 2,2007, the United Russia Party won 64.3 percent of the vote and 315seats in the 450-seat lower house.
