The European Union on Tuesday called on the newly elected Iranian parliament (Majlis) which convened the same day to contribute to the future prosperity of Iran.
"The task facing the Majlis is an important one, with a heavy responsibility for the future prosperity of the Iranian people," a statement from the rotating Slovenian EU Presidency said.
The statement calls for the Majlis to fully comply with Iran's international human rights obligations in its legislative work, in particular during the ratification of a new penal code.
It urges members of the Majlis to call for and support peaceful and responsible government policies, which should aim at enhancing regional stability and at restoring confidence between Iran and the international community.
The EU presidency reiterated its interest in dialogues with the Majlis and its members to promote the bilateral relationships between the EU and Iran.
Iran on Tuesday inaugurated its 8th parliament after two rounds of elections in March and April.
