An international military exercise started on Tuesday in the local waters of central Dalmatian islands at Croatia's Adriatic Coast, the official Hina news agency reported.
The exercise, code-named Adrion 08 Livex, is participated by six of the eight Adriatic-Ionian Initiative members including Albania, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia.
The exercise commander Croatian naval officer Miljenko Crljen told a news conference in the southern coastal city Split that this is the first time for Croatian officers to command an international military exercise.
The aim of the exercise is to check and improve the interoperability of naval forces engaged in the management and patrolling of the maritime security at the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, the report said.
Five Croatian naval ships and one from each participant of Albania, Greece, Italy and Slovenia have taken part in the exercise. Montenegro is an observer.
The exercise, which will last until Friday, was concurrent with the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative ministerial conference held in Croatian capital Zagreb.
