Over 6 million Romanians, almost 28 percent of the country's population, live under the poverty line, according to a study released Wednesday by the Partners Romania Foundation for Local Development (FPDL).
"Statistics look depressing enough. There are three levels of poverty: a relative poverty, a severe poverty and an extreme poverty. Three million people live in relative poverty, 2 million in severe poverty and 1 million in extreme poverty," said Nicole Rata, representative of FPDL.
She said that relative poverty was the one in which people compared themselves with others, found jobs with much more difficulty as they were labeled as being poor.
"You are already rejected and take a step back because there are holes in your shoes, because you do not manage to make a good impression. Severe poverty means that you have no access to education, are unemployed for a long time and this has permanent effects that affect man's chances of a real development," said Rata.
She maintained that extreme poverty meant that people's lives were permanently in danger and that their existence and health were in danger anytime.
"These people live very short lives, die very young, their children fall ill and die. The poor are not responsible for this situation as many of them have inherited it. They are not educated, have no job, suffer from diseases and discrimination," stressed the FPDL representative.
She made it clear that in Romania neither the right wing power nor the left wing one had a very clear approach to the problem of poverty.
FPDL, a Romanian non-governmental organization, was established in 1994 by trainers and experts in public administration, conflict and change management, economic development and urban planning, public finance management.
