Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu on Sunday urged citizens to cast their ballots in the local elections.
"I consider this vote a civic duty, not an obligation. I make an appeal to Bucharest locals and all citizens in the country to vote, as this is the only way they can elect the teams to solve their problems at community level," said the prime minister after his voting in the morning.
Municipal elections started in Romania Sunday morning to elect mayors, presidents of county councils, as well as members of the local and county councils for the next four-year mandates.
Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) and are due to close at 9:00 p.m. (1800 GMT). Some 18 million voters are expected to cast their ballots in 17,300 polling stations in 42 constituencies of the East European country.
Preliminary results are expected to be announced on Monday, ahead of a runoff date on June 15.
More than 350,000 people entered the electoral campaign in the country and no less than 3,800 target local administration posts in Bucharest.
About 9,000 gendarmes and 18,000 police officers have been deployed for the Sunday election.
