French Economy Minister Christine Lagarde has launched a parliamentary debate regarding the proposed law on the modernization of the economy that has been threatening to tear down the ruling Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), the French media reported on Tuesday.
The debate, which started in the national assembly on Monday, according to keen political observers, was made possible after Prime Minister Francois Fillon and ruling party lawmakers agreed on a compromise that helped diffuse growing tensions over the matter.
"I could summarize the proposed law in a few figures, including30 measures contained in 44 articles, at least 0.3 percent growth per annum from 2009 and 50,000 additional jobs per year. All this at cost of only 300 million euro (about 450 million dollars)," the minister told the parliament.
A few hours earlier, franked by senior UMP officials and prominent lawmakers, Fillon had announced a compromise on an issue that was slowly dividing the party, forcing President Nicolas Sarkozy to launch a tirade against "a section of parliamentarians opposed to reforms."
