Schiphol airport in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam closed one of its runways following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb, Dutch media reported Tuesday.
The bomb, an English 500 pounder, was found in excavation work Monday afternoon in the nearby village of Vijfhuizen. The inhabitants and the workers in the village were evacuated.
Police have cordoned off the area and the bomb will be dismantled Wednesday. Experts recommend a 36-hour safety margin between the time a bomb is discovered and its dismantling.
A similar bomb was discovered and defused in the same area in 2006.
