Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced Tuesday that Spain will provide 500 million euros (about 770 million U.S. dollars) over the next four years to combat the world food crisis.
Zapatero made the announcement in a speech at the Summit of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Italy.
Heads of state and government discussed issues relating to food security, climate change and bio-energy.
Zapatero said that to fight the food crisis, which affects more than 800 million people, words do not count, but action.
He said the summit must fulfill the goals and reinforce the UN leadership towards organizations, countries and societies that expect a solution to this grave food crisis.
He urged developed countries to raise aid for development cooperation.
The prime minister said he does not understand how with "so much poverty" some countries of the Organization for Economic and Cooperation Development (OECD) reduce their contribution to development cooperation.
He proposed another high-level meeting during the fall in Spain to evaluate what was approved during this summit and to write a "Letter of Food Security Rights."
