Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Wednesday that Poland's position on the Nord Steam pipeline remained unchanged and stressed that land transport of crude oil from Russia to Europe would be much cheaper and more effective, local media reported.
The Polish prime minister spoke while attending the summit of prime ministers of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in Riga, capital of Latvia.
"Each partner is free to choose. Poland's position is based on economic calculations but it is not Poland to take key decisions concerning this project. Our position remains unchanged," Polish news agency PAP quoted Tusk as saying.
"I am sure that talks with all European partners will continue to find out how to optimize decisions on gas transport and environment," Tusk told reporters during a news conference at the end of the summit.
While in Riga, Tusk held meetings with prime ministers of Norway and Sweden. Commenting on the talks, Tusk said they focused on the reduction of emission and explained that the situation in Poland in this regard is "somewhat special" requiring special regulations.
