Slovenia shut down its only nuclear power plant after a coolant leakage Wednesday, the European Commission (EC) said in a statement.
Slovenian authorities reported a loss of coolant in the primary cooling system at the Krsko nuclear power station and the plant was completely shut down, the European Union's executive body said.
There has been no impact on the environment and the situation is under control, according to Andrej Stritar, head of the Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration.
The plant was shut down and the leakage has already been located, Stritar said, adding the plant has to cool down for a day or so before the leakage can be repaired.
The Krsko plant was built in the 1980s and is jointly owned by Slovenia and neighbouring Croatia. The facility, located in southeastern Slovenia, generates about 5 billion kilowatts of electricity per year, or roughly 40 percent of Slovenia's energy needs.
The relatively small leakage remained within the containment building. The Slovenian authorities have confirmed that there has been no discharge to the environment, said the commission in the statement.
"The situation can be considered fully under control," it added.
