The environmental crisis is perhaps the greatest challenge facing human beings, Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said in a message published Thursday.
"It is an existing and pressing problem, a complex and multi-faceted problem, that places at risk life on our planet," Karamanlis said in the message marking World Environment Day.
He said Greece was implementing a strategy of sustainable growth and protection of the environment.
The strategy "comprises action and policies for limiting greenhouse gas emissions, the introduction of green energy into the country's grid, the adoption of modern perceptions on special planning, the rational management of water resources, recycling, and waste management," Karamanlis said.
Greece celebrated World Environment Day, which falls on June 5 each year, with a series of events beginning Thursday.
