Authorities have been on alert after a 6.5-magnitude quake in southwest Greece killed two people and injured dozens of others Sunday afternoon, Athens News Agency reported Monday.

Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis has decided that those whose houses were destroyed in the quake will each receive 3,000 euros as aid, while Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis has promised an additional 2,000 euros from KEDKE reserves, the report said.

Troops from the Emergency Task Force Unit (EMAK) from Athens, Ioannina and Lamia have arrived in the quake-stricken areas and a group of 25 civil engineers will carry out checks on all school buildings.

Schools in the prefectures of Achaia and Ilia will remain closed Monday. Sixty more civil engineers will check on other buildings in quake-stricken areas.

Sunday's quake struck at 03:25 p.m. local time (1225 GMT) with the epicenter near the town of Andravida, some 38 km away from theport city Patras in southwest Greece.

As the depth of the epicenter was only 10 km, the quake was even felt in the northern part of the country.

A strong aftershock with a 4.7 magnitude hit at about 03:45 p.m. Seismologists have been monitoring the aftershock sequence and asked the people to remain calm.
