France will massively cut its military troops in the coming years and spend more on military equipment upgrade, local media reported Monday.
According to the "White Book on Defense and Homeland Security" to be released soon by the French government, 54,000 defense jobs will be cut among the Defense Ministry's total staff of more than 320,000.
To meet requirements in defense and security missions in the new times, the French government has to upgrade military facilities with money saved by reducing troops and adjusting military bases under the current defense budget constraints.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy will present the plan to military and security officials on Tuesday.
A special committee was appointed by Sarkozy last July, in charge of analyzing security threats faced by France and drawing up a relevant national defense and security strategy.
The paper is to be discussed in parliament later this month.
