Over one hundred environment experts drawn from Africa and France are meeting in Nouakchott as part of a two-day workshop aimed at promoting the sharing of experiences in managing and recycling waste, according to information reaching here.
The meeting, which is being organized under the theme "Environment and recycling: sharing experiences," is intended to help the two sides come together to brainstorm on ways and means of managing waste, according to a statement issued by the organizers Tuesday.
Held at the initiative of a non-governmental organization GRET and the Nouakchott Urban Community, the two-day meeting is bringing together participants from countries such as Mauritania, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and France, according to the organizers.
"The forum is education-oriented as its focus is in the presentation of different experiences regarding sustainable waste management and recycling in countries from across the sub-region and France," Alicia Tsitsikalis, GRET's head of information, was quoted as saying by the Pan-African News Agency (PANA).
The objectives of the Nouakchott workshop, according to the organizers, are, among other things, to educate and inform institutional actors such as local authorities and ministries on the issue of recycling.
The meeting will also seek to create greater awareness among lenders, including banks and other development partners, the civil society at large (businesses, artisans, associations, NGOs, trade unions and federations) on the definition, processes, benefits and stakes involved in waste management, according to the statement.
In addition, the meeting has the objective of creating a forum where actors involved in recycling can initiate debate on the issue, identify priority areas for public intervention, said the statement, adding: "It will also initiate exchanges on the development of a comprehensive policy on waste management."
"A presentation of experiences in the sub-region, a reflection on public actions to save the environment in the fields of recycling from the experiences of France and Tunisia is also included in the program of the workshop regarding the situation in Mauritania, according to the organizers.
