At the EU summit scheduled for Thursday, Poland will come out for a continued ratification by EU states of the Lisbon Treaty, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Grazyna Bernatowicz said here Wednesday.
"We will be preparing ground for a possible Irish change of mind that may come at a time most suitable for Ireland," she told a Senate committee.
"One thing which is certain now is that the Lisbon Treaty will not come into force as of Jan. 1, 2009, and the EU's continued functioning on the basis of the Nice Treaty is bound to be very difficult," Polish news agency PAP quoted the minister as saying.
She declared that if there was a revival in the EU of a tendency to cling around the so-called enhanced cooperation structures, like Euroland, Poland should seek rescue in a swift euro adoption.
Another issue of importance for Poland due to be tackled at the EU summit is the so-called Eastern Partnership project proposed by Poland and Sweden. "Support from Sweden is invaluable and we believe Sweden will inspire our initiatives also in future," Bernatowicz said.
Poland has held consultations with the countries that will be included in the project, above all with Ukraine, she added.
