Four French nationals working for the nuclear manufacturer Areva have been abducted by rebels in the West African country of Niger, the French Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday.

The French side said it has set up a crisis team to work with the company Areva and the French embassy in Niger. The four people were abducted on Sunday.

A spokesman for Areva was quoted by media as saying that the four, including one woman and three men, went missing on Sunday in the town of Arlit, north Niger.

The African country is one of the world's leading uranium producers.
