Delegates from over 50 countries met in Vienna Monday to discuss financial assistance for the reconstruction of the destroyed Nahr el Bared Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon.

Speaking at the International Donors' Conference, Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik said the reconstruction of the war-ravaged refugee camp is "an important political and humanitarian concern."

The international community should offer "a decent life" for those Palestinian refugees and this conference is "a concrete contribution to stability in Lebanon," she said.

The lasting stabilization of Lebanon is indispensable to the Middle East peace process, she said.

The Nahr el Bared refugee camp, located near the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, was destroyed during the 3-month-long war last summer between Lebanese government troops and the radical organization Fatah al-Islam and some 30,000 people have been displaced.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees has estimated that the reconstruction of the refugee camp would cost some 282 million U.S. dollars. Construction is expected to begin in early 2009 and finish in mid-2011.
