Lithuania will hold negotiations with the European Union this fall regarding extending the operation of the Ignalina nuclear power plant, Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas said Thursday.
Lithuania has already held discussions with the EU on this issue, explaining the likely effects of the closure of the plant, the prime minister said during an interview with local radio in his country's capital of Vilnius.
"The EU well understands our situation," he said.
Built in the 1980s, the Ignalina plant is the only nuclear power plant in the Baltic region. According to an agreement with the EU, Lithuania closed the first reactor for safety reasons and is scheduled to close the second one at the end of 2009.
However, the country is worried about a likely power shortage before a substitute nuclear power plant becomes operational in 2015, and is calling on the EU to postpone the shutdown of the Ignalina plant. Source:Xinhua
