The King of Spain, H.M. Juan CarlosI, said here on Monday that the theme of the on-going World Petroleum Congress - delivering energy for sustainable growth is a very good reflection of the reality.

Speaking at the official opening of the 19th World Petroleum Congress, the Spanish king said that in the days when the oil price is reaching its all-time high, and the world attention is focused on climate change, the congress, with its theme on delivering energy for sustainable growth, is a "relevant event in a relevant time."

He said that at the start of the century, when oil price remained at around 20 to 30 U.S. dollars a barrel, people did not care about any alternative to oil in their energy consumption, and environment was not such an important criteria for energy industry as it is now.

The Spanish King said that the theme of the Madrid congress itself is a very good reflection of the reality the world is facing.

Stressing the need t" develop clean energy and respect environment, the Spanish King called for a "new model" which would be efficient and transparent and show respect for the environment.

The Madrid congress, coincides with the World Petroleum Council's 75th Anniversary, which started in 1933, claims to include a number of new features. High-level Plenaries from leading industry decision makers, interactive Round Tables and in-depth Forums with innovative Posters on a wide variety of industry aspects will address the status quo and the main challenges the sector is facing.

Best Practice Keynotes on the main issues in the upstream, downstream, natural gas, renewables and management of the industry will add further to the quality of the program.

Key issues such as balancing the requirements of supply and demand, social and environmental responsibilities of the industry and ensuring the attraction and retention of the next generation of professionals will be addressed throughout the four days of the Congress.
