Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has accepted Roman Abramovich's resignation as governor of the Chukotka autonomous area, the presidential press service reported Thursday.

The president has appointed Roman Kopin, 34, former deputy governor overseeing industry and agriculture, as acting governor of Chukotka.

Abramovich's spokesman said the businessman would continue investing in the region's development after his resignation.

"The mission has been accomplished, but this does not mean he has finished his work in the region," the spokesman was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying, adding that Abramovich runs two charitable funds in Chukotka.

Abramovich was elected as governor of the Chukotka autonomous area on Dec. 24, 2000. Former Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed him as governor for a new term in 2005.

The businessman is ranked the country's second richest man by Forbes magazine with an estimated 23 billion U.S. dollars. His business interests include steel plants and coal companies in Russia and abroad. In the West, he is best known as the owner of Chelsea soccer club.
