The Turkish Parliament on Tuesday adopted a motion authorizing the Turkish government to extend the mandate of Turkish troops under the banner of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
According to the motion sent by the Prime Ministry, Turkish troops will continue serving in Lebanon for another year, beginning as of Sept. 5, 2008.
Turkish troops were allowed to stay for one year in Lebanon under the UN Security Council resolution on Aug. 11, 2006 and in line with Turkish parliament's decision on Sept. 5, 2006.
This is the second time Turkey extended the mandate of its troops in Lebanon. It extended the troops' mandate on Sept. 5, 2007 for one year following a decision made by the Turkish parliament.
The UN Security Council is expected to adopt another resolution in August to extend the UNIFIL's mandate which would end on Aug. 31, 2008, the motion said. Source:Xinhua
