Austrian Interior Minister Maria Fekter urged Central and Southeast European countries on Friday to take over the leading role of security in Europe, as they pledged in the closing statement of the West Balkan Security Conference which ended Friday.

Fekter explained that this region had both positive and negative experiences about coexistence of different cultures and therefore had "the potential to take over this particularly formative role."

She pointed out that this region "is essential for the security of the EU," believing that a workable cultural talk could not only be seen as "just a cultural concern," but "an important instrument of preventive security policy."

She emphasized that fighting against the existing terror network could not be achieved alone. She took the situation of Bosnia Herzegovina and Montenegro as examples to further explain how to use peaceful talk to solve armed conflicts and how to coexist peacefully.

Being conducted since July 17 in Vienna, the conference was attended by 15 European Interior Ministers from Central and Southeast Europe countries as well as representatives from the EU and the United States.
