Polish President Lech Kaczynski will pay a working visit to the Czech Republic on Thursday to discuss the future of the European Union (EU), the Czech news agency CTK said on Friday.

It is speculated that Kaczynski might plead with Czech President Vaclav Klaus to change his negative stand on the Lisbon treaty.

Klaus, whose country will preside the EU in the first six months of 2009, considers the Lisbon treaty dead after the Irish rejected it in referendum.

Kaczynski himself changed his mind during a recent meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in France. He said he would not block the adoption of the treaty.

Klaus is the sole leading politician in Europe who clearly rejects the Lisbon treaty.

According to sources from the seat of the French president, Kaczynski promised to personally work for the treaty to be approved by all countries. He allegedly wants to use his friendly and long-lasting relations with Klaus.

France took over the half-year EU presidency on July 1.
