European Union's space affairs ministers on Monday met at the spaceport of Kourou, French Guiana to discuss issues related to space policies and projects.
The European ministers talked about the role that space technology can play in tackling climate change at the two-day meeting convened by France, the current holder of the rotating EU presidency.
They hoped to improve the EU system of Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) in a bid to provide reliable data on climate change, the environment and natural disasters as well as offering a basis for the EU to make policies on environmental protection and take precautionary measures.
The European Union should lead the van of research on climate change, said French minister of Higher Education and Research Valerie Pecresse, who also proposed establishing a research center to integrate resources and data from different countries to address the challenges of global warming.
The ministers also discussed such issues as how to safeguard security in Europe by using space technology and improve EU's competitiveness in this field, space monitoring as well as international cooperation in the field of space.
