Russia-Venezuela cooperation contributes to global energy security and prospect of the cooperation is broad, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Tuesday.
He made the remarks after talks with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez at the presidential residence in Gorki outside Moscow.
"Energy security depends on our coordinated efforts," Medvedev was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying, adding that the two countries will take mutually beneficial, coordinated and correct actions.
"Our cooperation is not aimed against other countries," the president said. The cooperation will not only benefit peoples of Russia and Venezuela, but also other countries, which cooperate with the two nations and whose number is on the rise, he said.
Medvedev expressed his confidence over the bright future for Russian-Venezuelan cooperation, saying that "our cooperation is developing well enough and we've made a very serious move forwards."
Russian energy companies signed cooperation agreements with Venezuela's state oil and gas company as part of an official visit by Chavez aimed at boosting energy cooperation with Russia.
"We agreed not only to sign them but also to take implementation of a number of large projects under control," Medvedev said.
Meanwhile, Medvedev said Russia-Venezuela cooperation is an important factor for ensuring regional security when he began talks with Chavez.
Chavez has called on Russia and Venezuela to become strategic partners in oil and defense fields, saying it would "guarantee Venezuela's sovereignty, which is currently being threatened by the United States."
Chavez arrived in Moscow Tuesday for "strategic" talks on political, economic and defense cooperation. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is also expected to meet with the Venezuelan leader.
