Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with the Russian Olympic team at the Kremlin on Monday, wishing them brilliant performances at the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

"Today, we solemnly bid farewell to our glorious athletes to the Summer Olympic Games. Every one who is leaving for Beijing has in fact proved his or her world class. And we have every ground to wait for brilliant victories," Medvedev was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Speaking to athletes, who will take part in the Olympic Games, for the first time, Medvedev said, "Sport and luck love courage, and newcomers are as a rule lucky."

A total of 467 Russian athletes, who will compete in 244 out of 302 Olympic sports events, make up the country's Olympic team, and the Russian Olympic delegation consists of more than 900 people.

Russia aims to win medals in boxing, wrestling, rhythmic gymnastics, shooting, synchronized swimming, weightlifting, fencing, and athletics, and eyes top-three place on the medal tally at the Beijing Olympics.
